Lymphedema is a pathological condition in which the lymphatic system (the lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes) does not function effectively, resulting in the accumulation of lymph in the cells, tissues, and organs. Lymph is part of the body’s defense mechanism, cleaning the tissues from various pathogens, and then passing through and being filtered by the lymph nodes.

Lymphedema is classified into:
Primary Lymphedema, where the lymphatic network presents congenital anatomical abnormalities.
Secondary (acquired) Lymphedema, which occurs after severe damage to the lymphatic system, most commonly due to surgical removal of cancerous lymph nodes or radiation therapy as part of cancer treatment.

STAGES OF LYMPHEDEMA

Stage 1: Reversible
Pressure on the limb leaves an indentation, while the swelling temporarily subsides when the limb is elevated.
Stage 2: Irreversible
If Lymphedema is not treated in time, it leads to progressive hardening of the area, which does not improve with elevation.
Stage 3: Lymphostatic Elephantiasis
Significant increase in swelling. Hardening of the skin with cartilage-like formations. Development of sarcomas.
